As one of the largest employers in the area, UPI contributes more than $150 million annually to the regional economy through its purchase of goods and services, employee payroll, and payment of property and local taxes.

Being a good corporate citizen goes far beyond dollars and cents. We take our responsibilities seriously to be good neighbors and participate in the communities where we live and work. We provide support to a number of organizations in the areas of human needs, culture and the arts, and education.

UPI’s Learning Center is a true community asset. It is open to all employees, and in many cases, their families and other members of the community, providing educational opportunities leading to higher level degrees, and hands on training for a multitude of sought after skills.

Every year, we support the United Way through employee pledges and corporate gifts. Hundreds of employees and their families and friends have participated in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s “Walk to Cure Diabetes,” making UPI one of the top fundraising companies in the East Bay. We open our plant for educational tours and student visitors. We participate in local Career Days, and offer job shadowing to give students firsthand experience in the working world. Many employees volunteer for several Education Outreach Programs, including Mr. Wizard electricity classes, Project READ, “Choices” presentations and Junior Achievement, to help fill the needs in our local communities.

We are also proud of our ongoing program to restore, protect and monitor our environment. Environmental excellence goes hand in hand with being a world-class manufacturer. Our environmental management system has been recognized through several national and international awards. And many of our environmental controls are state-of-the-art, including an ultra-filtration system and thermal waste treatment controls.
